After the two possible plays, how much has your position gotten better or worse if your opponent "performs" or not?

If you play 5/1*, I'd count any ace as very minus (because of gammon cost (and fewer wins, obviously)), other entering numbers as almost neutral (you're about where you were, having lost a good builder, but the acepoint checker isn't out of play yet), and the fanning numbers moderately plus (you've gained a tempo to run or attack, but you don't have much of an attack). If you play 8/3, I'd count escaping numbers moderately minus (you're not much worse than you were before this 5-1) and all the others moderately plus (you've added a fourth builder to a possible attack).

Overall I think the balance favors 8/3.
