Using the doubling cube in Chess

A cube seems more natural in a game with a higher level of volatility than chess like, say, backgammon.
If chess were PURELY a game of skill then chess matches would only need to be 1-pointers. By analogy, if I went into the ring with Manny Pacquiao, then one round, 12 rounds, no difference: knock-out. (If anyone is wondering, me on the mat.)
But for a number of obvious reasons, chess matches are multiple games. If they wanted half the games, they'd make the matches half as long. The cube is far more nuanced in BG.
