Using the doubling cube in Chess

My friends and I did something like this in grad school, with the twist that draws count as wins for whoever holds the cube. Without the inherent random element of bg, the cube in chess isn't the same, but this has a bit of the same feel of making players estimate the equity. However, our point in starting it was what I imagine started it in bg as well - making people who never resign, even when in a nearly hopeless position, pay to keep playing.
