Using the doubling cube in Chess

It was popular in Montreal in the 70s, where it was called "contra." Cube ownership entailed draw odds. Why nobody is mentioning the obvious I don't know; it was used for speed chess, where player imbalance would be countered by clock odds. I seem to remember Walter Browne and Camille Coudari playing.
