Also common for speed chess("Blitz") in germany. Imagine you play openings like the Marshall Attack in the Ruy López, where you have to know variants up to the 30th move. Or the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. There is also a variant of chouette a trois with jackpot, where the loser pays in the jackpot, and the winner of two consecutively games cashes all, what has been payed by now. And than a new round starts. If there is a possibility, men will gamble.
