Likely in your case it is a permission issue. On Vista/Win7 writing outside of your user directory in certain places (Like anywhere under c:\program file) can deny you write permission unless you have elevated user privileges. You can change the permissions of a folder from windows explorer if you are so inclined.

One safe place to write is anywhere under your own User Account folder. Your flash drive probably works because that will have full access.

One way to try to see if this is the issue is to wrote a file... let us say in C:\program files\GridGammon (or some other folder) with notepad/wordpad. Another place where this can happen is inside the windows directory (and subdir) Does it write? Now write a file to your "MY Documents" folder or the desktop (And directories sin your user account show work).

The suggestion Paul made is to run XG as Administrator. This will elevate your privs to Administrator when running XG so it will read and write freely across *most* of the system. If none of these things occurs as I would expect when tested, then there is something else amiss.
