I would like to add one point to Paul's convincing explanation although it is one that you and most other readers here are surely aware of.

The hitting number variation has sequences that continue to degrade your game, particularly compared with the rolls you get next when not hit.

Four dances plus 2-6 creates another blot, and if you look at the other incomings there are several of them that are likely to be uncomfortable. As we all know whenever you need to enter with one number you are short-changed compared to having the full roll, but the more undeveloped your position is, the more likely dire consequences result.
