Playing "touch" in tournaments

I had never played in a real backgammon tournament until this weekend (OK, I played the beginners, but it was a tournament nevertheless). The rules allowed for the usual rearranging of the pieces until a move's end.
This means that I had to be vigilant about my opponent's correclty putting back the touched pieces, which means I had to spend some mental energy focusing on what they did as opposed to focusing on my game plan or relaxing my brain while they played.
As I grew tired, I found having to keep track of my opponent's pieces repositioning to be unnecessarily taxing.
Wouldn't it be better to play "touch", that is, if you touch a piece, you have to move it?
