In backgammon... up to eight checkers [instead of two checkers] can change position on a turn.

Good point: that increases the average visualization burden on the player. However, it also increases the average burden on the opponent, as candidate moves put onto the board (that might not be played) stray that much further from the main position. Arguably that issue may be asymmetrical, but I also don't see it as the main issue.
