I'm curious to know, what exactly is the rule in Greece?
If you touch a checker you must move it?
If you lift a checker you must move it?
If you move a checker off its point you must move it?
If you set a checker down on another point you must move it there?
If you let go of a checker on another point you must leave it there? Well in most informal games played every day(it's a national hobby of ours don't forget) the common rule/way (actually these kind of games are played in a friendly manner so there is not a strict forcing of rules applied) of playing is: after the dice is being rolled the player thinks for some time and plays his turn. If he regrets of a checker movement, before completing his whole turn then he is allowed to make another one. If he has finished a legal move he is normally not allowed to take back. Of course sometimes in games between friends this is allowed in a good spirit. But no one does these tryouts, no one tries things on the board that is. Only mentally in his head.
In more formal games like some tournaments organized here and there, rules vary but in no single one it is allowed to experiment and try things out on the board and of course there is no take back whatsoever. Most of them will allow you to touch as much as you want your own checkers and even change your mind after "almost placing"(having your hand still putting the checker to one point) one checker somewhere and take it back, but after you make a checker placement(leaving it from your hand) you are normally not allowed to take it back.
I think Chess FIDE rules are the best way that Backgammon should be played also. I can't believe for a second that Backgammon players, and especially those of that caliber for playing in a World Championship, can't mentally think about their moves.
