Part of the fun of the (rather alcohol-fuelled) chouettes I played in Cambridge was the duty of the team to provide as unhelpful and/or cryptic advice as possible to the box, as much as to the captain... I think the most important thing is that all participants are reasonably closely aligned as to what they want to get out of the game, entertainment, cash or wisdom.
