Do we want fun or speed?

In any game or any variant of a game the rules it is played by are dictated by what sort of feel one wants to create.
I’d say that the main aim of your chouette player is skill and potential profit. Yes, the fun of playing this social form of backgammon is a factor but this is usually a low priority. Hence most chouette house rules are designed with skill and experience priorities in mind. The potential of bickering over moves when there is little at stake just reduces the interest of money players so is often eradicated via rules such as no consulting until cube action has happened and the Jacoby rule. I.E. Let’s cut out the crap we all (should) know; the real interest comes in the latter part of games. There ain’t nothing wrong with that if that's what your aiming for.
But if your aim is to have loads of fun with all your friends over a single backgammon board there is a better variant of backgammon for you. It probably requires you all having had a drink or two, you might want to wear ear-muffs, no one player has overall say as to which move is played so everybody has to argue his/her case for the move they favour and then a vote is taken. Please don’t expect games to complete quickly but hay, you’re having a load of fun so who the hell cares! There ain’t nothing wrong with that if that's what your aiming for: http://www.backgammoninlondon.com/bglil/filming/clip_15.htm
