Rules or Etiquette

Three players are chouetting and play by 'legal' moves, which means if an illegal play comes up and a player happens to notice it, that person is allowed to speak on it even if there are no cubes turned.
The captain had double 5 to play (doesn't really matter, no position is needed for this example) and proceeded to make an illegal play which consisted of putting one of the boxes checkers on the bar.
The box said that this was an illegal move, that the checkers could not go there and "did you mean to put them here?"
The captain says, "ah yes, that is what I meant." leaving the checker on the bar though it could not be hit by making the legal checker moves.
The box then says "is this your move?" (check still on bar) and the captain relies "yes", whereupon the box takes the checker off the roof and puts it back in to the legal pip spot and proceeds with the game.
The player on the side speaks up saying that "if an illegal move was made, you would have to reset the position to it's original state so the the captain could see what he was doing". The box protested and thus this debate came about.
