Although I think that using things like flat screen table top machines will become more of a norm in the future, I'm not sure how well received board games without real tactile contact (lifting checkers, rolling dice etc) would be received in today's world.
With that being said I think putting sensors on a board could be bulky as well. A solution where you could use the checkers and boards (and maybe even dice) that you normally use, along with a separate "recording device" would be interesting, and not entirely far fetched. If you can use existing equipment and provide automated match recording from it at not such a high cost would be ideal IMHO.
Software that could analyse the video feed from a high quality recording device (above the table?) and determine checker positions, dice rolls, and then record the position in real time with little interaction from the players is probably not so far fetched.
A tournament where you require recorded matches to be analysed could use hi res wifi cameras. If a tournament director could set up their own wifi network at their location and provide a mounted camera (wifi), they could broadcast the video to a central machine for analysis. The machine(s) would handle multiple feeds. If smart phones could be mounted you could probably have an application on the phone do the video analysis and send the results to a central location.
You'd have to come up with mechanisms with dealing with stacked checkers on a point. Maybe some method of tagging the checkers could be adopted. You'd also need to record the score of each game.
You will likely need rule changes to handle the logistics in making sure the move was picked up by the recording equipment etc (unobstructed view of the board, dice, doubling cube that are rolled for a small period of time (for example).
Do I think this is doable? I think so.
A smartphone that could record a match, convert it into a move history in real time, and maybe even do analysis could be a valuable tool for individual players and could be cost effective without investing larger amounts money.
