Prince Alexis Obolensky's First Annual International Backgammon Tournament in the Bahamas in 1964 had a field of 48 and a $50 entry fee. The winner, Charles H. Wacker III, won $1,645. His Calcutta holder collected $6,170.

"Backgammon is for idiots and rich people," said Jelly Wehby, the tournament's "unofficial bookmaker." "It looks like what kids do, moving little deals around on that board. But it's got action, and cash passes hands. I guess I better learn it, in case they come down here again."
