Mini-backgammon ?

I am trying to introduce my numbers-inclined 4.5-years old to backgammon, but have never managed to actually finished a game with him because games are too long and he gets bored. I wonder whether there existed a mini variant of backgammon in the spirit of the 5x5 or 5x6 variants of Minichess, that is as close as possible to the real thing, and that would be more enjoyable to kids than full-blown backgammon.

One could for instance play on just the half of the board, with less checkers. I'd tend to to keep ordinary dice and hence forget about full-priming, but maybe a variant with four-sided dice would make sense too.

Did you hear of such a thing, and if not, how would you design it ?
