THE OLYMPICS OF BACKGAMMON

Karen Davis

Who will represent the U.S. in The International Backgammon Championship – the Olympics of Backgammon? Four people will be selected in the U.S. Playoffs directed by Stick in matches played online on GridGammon which started on September 6 and will run until October 10. If you’d like to follow the action, sign up for the U.S. Backgammon Federation Twitter http://www.twitter.com/usbgf and Facebook http://www.facebook.com/usbgf to receive notices when matches will be played.

Players qualified for the U.S. Playoffs in a number of ways – entering the donor pool at ABT and USBGF tournaments and going the furthest of those participating in the action; winning local club qualifiers; or entering the U.S. Playoffs directly; as well as the ABT 2010 champion and 2011 leader as of September 5 and a representative of the winning team in the USBGF National Club Team Championship.

It’s a star-studded field – laced with current Giants of Backgammon as well as many of the big names of the early years of the game including former World Champions and World Amateur Champions. Seven contestants qualified twice – Ray Fogerlund, Neil Kazaross, Richard Munitz, Falafel Natanzon, Ed O’Laughlin, Rory Pascar, and Joe Russell! See the list of U.S. qualifiers below.

The single-elimination format consists of the best two out of three 5-point matches in the first two rounds and the best two out of three 7-point matches in the final two rounds. The first round will be completed in 12 days starting with September 6, the second 10 days, and the third and fourth 7 days.

On October 12, the four selected U.S. players will compete with players from 12 nations in the International Backgammon Championship. Entry fees for the four U.S. players are being paid by the U.S. Backgammon Federation. The first rounds are planned to take place online, with the semi-finals and finals held live in a location to be selected.
