How does XG filter cube decisions?

This is a bot-specific question but I think the answer will be of general interest.

Suppose I do a 3-ply/3-ply rollout. What exactly does this mean about how the cube will be handled during the rollout? I assume that it does not mean that XG will do a full 3-ply evaluation of every cube decision in every rollout trial. Instead, I assume that XG will filter out some cube decisions as "obvious" and not bother with anything more than a 1-ply evaluation. But what exactly are the criteria? Does the move filter affect cube evaluations?

There have been times when I have asked for a "world-class" analysis of a cube decision and XG spits out a 1-ply evaluation that is totally off the mark. When I'm doing this manually, I can force XG to do a 3-ply evaluation or an XGR+ evaluation or whatever. Is it possible to control the rollout settings in an analogous manner, if I know that there is an upcoming cube decision that XG is at risk of incorrectly filtering out?
