I don't see miscounting the pips as being much different from mis-evaluating the position in other ways. There is nothing wrong with doubling because you think your opponent will drop, even if you know it is not a double in theory.

I think it is fairly sleazy to lie about the pip count in order to trick the opponent into doubling. Assuming it was just an accident on his part, I don't think the rules technically permit you to take back your double even with his permission, although it's not the worst thing in the world. I don't think he could assume you were trying to take advantage of him with the double, because for all he knows you never finished your count because you trusted him.

In any event, players simply shouldn't discuss the pip count during a tournament match, regardless of what their motives may be. Nothing good can come of it.
