I can't understand why somebody would have trouble counting race position of 70-80ish pips...

I've miscounted such length races multiple times. Once I doubled my opp (I was leading in a close match) when I thought I had a significant lead (without any verbal indication of the pipcount, of course). My opp didn't immediately snap the cube up (as it turns out he was REcounting the race) and eventually took, ahead by 2 pips.
