I agree with Phil's premise that the initiator be at a disadvantage and with Henrik in his observation/contention. In particular, the improprieties were begun by the doubler failing to follow the (in this case clear) US rule that the doubling cube be moved from the side of the board to the middle of the playing surface. If this had happened would the ambiguity of later actions been avoided? Not known, of course, but the route would have been easier to follow.
