I'm really surprised there's only one for for making the 4pt. Let's review the facts.
- While there is no value in winning a gammon and we can't use the cube the gammon value is nowhere near gammon go. The gv for our opponent is basically the same as it is for money.
- We are behind in the race. While our opponent's game plan may be to hit us since his board is momentarily stronger and he has a lot of men in the zone our game plan isn't to race. What is our game plan? To contain our opponent's unsplit back checkers. He will be able to split soon and still has the option of turning this into a race since we're underdeveloped and playing scared.
- Playing 16/10 is not safe, it is safer. We still leave 5 shots.
- If we do make the 4pt and our opponent hits at least it will cost him the midpoint.
All that was said more or less in defense of making the 4pt because I felt the vote was too one sided. I'm not sure what's right and when I'm not sure I start thinking in variants. What play do I make for money or dmp for example? Both situations I make the 4pt because the former my gammons count and in the latter my gammon losses do not count. How about this position?
White is Player 2
score: 11
pip: 13415 point match
Crawfordpip: 146
score: 14
Blue is Player 1XGID=-b----E-C---bFA--b-e-bb---:0:0:1:31:14:11:1:15:10 Blue to play 31
I make the 5pt here in a heartbeat. My general rule of thumb for this type of position is to make the point. There are too many clauses to spell out this rule and it of course doesn't apply in score based decisions like this one. Anyway, 16/10 wins the vote so it doesn't matter what my vote is but I'll take the 4pt because I feel it was under represented.
