62S-51H-54@-55 — Nactation Challenge
Posted By: Taper_Mike In Response To: 62S-51H-54@-55 — Nactation Challenge (Nack Ballard)
Date: Sunday, 6 November 2011, at 11:43 p.m.
This turned out to be much more challenging than I expected!
Thanks to Tommy and Nack for correcting my mistake in the O (Outer) family.
I believe the following Nactations are correct, although I still have some concerns as to whether I have properly applied the "wrinkle" in the 6pt Convention to the move in the
I (Inside) family: 13/8, 7/2, 6/1(2).
- O (Outer) = P (Point) = 13/3(2) — See Diagram 5 and Diagram 8.
- O (Outer) = 13/8, 8/3(2), 7/2 — See Diagram 6 and Diagram 7.
- J (Jump) = 13/8, 8/3(2), 6/1 — See Diagram 4.
- I (Inside) = 13/8, 7/2, 6/1(2) — See Diagram 2 and Diagram 3.

Diagram 1
62S-51H-54@-55
XGID=-----bEAC---dDa--c-e----B-:0:0:1:55:0:0:3:0:10 62S-51H-54@-55 — Blue to play 5-5
This is the position before Blue plays 5-5.
Diagram 2
Family: I (Inside)
Rank: 1st
I = 13/8, 7/2, 6/1(2)
62S-51H-54@-55I — Blue has already moved.
Identify the Nactation Family:
- 13/8 moves 1 checker down. 7/2 jumps the bar with 1 checker. 6/1(2) moves 2 checkers inside.
- Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:1:2
- Therefore, the family is I (Inside).
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- Hit Convention: There are no hits.
- Most Points Convention: This play makes 1 new point. Net: +1
- 6pt Convention:
Owned Points: Irrelevant
Blots & Spares: The blot moved to the 2pt is 4 pips away from the 6pt. By the wrinkle in the 6pt convention, this ranks better than leaving it on the 7pt.
Diagram 3
Family: I (Inside)
Rank: 2nd
i = 13/8, 8/3, 6/1(2)
62S-51H-54@-55i — Blue has already moved.
Identify the Nactation Family:
- 13/8 moves 1 checker down. 8/3 jumps the bar with 1 checker. 6/1(2) moves 2 checkers inside.
- Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:1:2
- Therefore, the family is I (Inside).
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- Hit Convention: There are no hits.
- Most Points Convention: This play makes 1 new point. Net: +1
- 6pt Convention:
Owned Points: Irrelevant
Blots & Spares: The blot left on the 7pt is too close to the 6pt. The wrinkle in the 6pt Convention favors blots that that are farther away in the outer board.
Diagram 4
Family: J (Jump)
Rank: 1st
J = 13/8, 8/3(2), 6/1
62S-51H-54@-55J — Blue has already moved
Identify the Nactation Family:
- 13/8 moves 1 checker down. 8/3(2) jumps the bar with 2 checkers. 6/1 moves 1 checker inside.
- Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:2:1
- Therefore, the family is J (Jump).
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- Hit Convention: There are no hits.
- Most Points Convention: This play makes 1 new point. Net: +1
- 6pt Convention: Irrelevant, because no other play in this family makes a new point.
Diagram 5
Family: O (Outer)
Rank: 1st
O = 13/3(2)
62S-51H-54@-55O — Blue has already moved.
Identify the Nactation Family:
- This play moves 2 checkers into Blue's outer board, and 2 checkers out.
- Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:2:2:0
- Therefore, the family is O (Outer).
- This play can also be nactated P (Point). See Diagram 8 below.
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- Hit Convention: There are no hits.
- Most Points Convention: It makes a new point (the 3pt), while retaining the 8pt and the midpoint. Net: +1
- 6pt Convention: Irrelevant
Diagram 6
Family: O (Outer)
Rank: 1st
O = 13/8, 8/3(2), 7/2
62S-51H-54@-55O — Blue has already moved
Identify the Nactation Family:
- This play moves 1 checker into Blue's outer board, and 3 checkers out.
- Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 0:1:3:0
- Therefore, the family is O (Outer).
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- Hit Convention: There are no hits.
- Most Points Convention: It makes a new point (the 3pt), while retaining the 8pt and the midpoint. Net: +1
- 6pt Convention: Irrelevant
Diagram 7
Family: O (Outer)
Rank: 2nd
o = 13/8, 8/3(3)
- Most Points Convention: This play retains the midpoint, and makes the 3pt, but also abandons the 8pt. Net: 0
- 6pt Convention: Irrelevant
Diagram 8
Family: P (Point)
Rank: 1st
P = 13/3(2)
62S-51H-54@-55P — Blue has already moved.
Identify the Nactation Family:
- This play uses all 4 parts of the doublet 55 to make a new point.
- Therefore, the family is P (Point).
- This play can also be nactated O (Outer). See Diagram 5 above.
Then apply the Hit/Most/Six Rule:
- As there is only one member of the P family in this position, the Hit/Most/Six Rule is irrelevant.
