A Procedural Definition of Hit/Most/Six

The general readership might be interested in why I chose to break the equidistance-from-6pt tie with the lower-numbered point (as opposed to the higher-numbered point). Two reasons:
- On average, inner board points are more valuable than their outer board counterparts. (For example, the 5pt is more valuable than the 7pt; the 4pt is more valuable than the 8pt.)
- On both real backgammon boards and in diagrams, the existence of the bar puts physical space between the 6pt and 7pt. As a consequence, the other five inner board points look closer to the 6pt than their outer board counterparts. For example (after an opening 42 in the diagram above), the 4pt looks closer to the 6pt than the 8pt does.
To Mike: I'm not sure this helps or not, but... To help shorten or simplify your procedural definition (designed for a computer program), you might consider referring to the owned point closest to some arbitrary number between 5.5 and 6, say 5.8. That automatically ranks all 24 points (no ties).
