In Response To: Midboard: an alternate term for "opponent's outer board" (Bob Koca)

How often is "outer points" used in backgammon writing? It does not sound familiar at all.

I say "outer points" (as well as "inner points") sometimes. But aargh -- that's not the issue.

My point was that if you your objection (or one of your objections) to midboard is that the concept/location of "mid" belongs between "inner" and "outer," than why wouldn't you have a similar objection to "midpoint"? Maybe you do.

I believe the term "midpoint" is a reference to it being approximately midway between the extremes of entering and bearing off, and that is has nothing to do with inner and outer. (A player's inner and outer boards and points are on his near side, with his midpoint just beyond them on the far side.) Therefore, whatever else you may think of the term "midboard," I don't think the fact that it does not lie between inner and outer invalidates it in the least; indeed (if judged by midpoint disposition), that's not even where it should be expected to lie. That's all I was saying.
