Definition of T (sTack, Tower)

In Response To: Nactation questions (Taper_Mike)

As Mike pointed out (in the bottom of that post), the original Nactation tutorial states:

T (sTack or Tower) is distinguished from [L (Lift)] because it only adds to a point already containing three or more checkers prior to the play. L can add to a point that starts with two (or more) checkers."

In line with what Stick stated, the updated tutorial (not yet published) states:

T (sTack or Tower) only adds to a point that, when the play is completed, will contain four or more checkers. L can add to a point that ends up with three (or more) checkers.

This update (made last year during the revamp) does not change the application of L. However, it does subtly change the application of T. The reason for the change is that in stumbling across a few positions I realized that T's purview had been unnecessarily limited. Below is an example.

 ' ' ' '2O5X '4X ' ' '3O

 '2O ' '2X4O '2O2O ' '4X

In this position, the 8pt starts with two checkers. Under the old definition of T, you would use "b" for 20/8(2). Under the new definition of T, you can also use b for 20/8(2), but I recommend T because it is a capital letter and it is more stylish.

To clarify, 13/8 cannot be T in 42P-51S-32 (the position under discussion earlier in this thread, diagrammed below for reference) -- it does not matter whether the old or new definition of T is applied. Indeed, in the overwhelming majority of applicable positions, old or new makes no difference.

2O ' ' ' '5X '4X ' ' '5O

1X1X '2O '4O '2O ' ' '4X

42P-51S-32
