In Response To: 61P-31P-33, weak bot content (Nack Ballard)

As a cruel joke not-so-carefully disguised as helpful advise, Paul suggests playing 24/21(2) 8/5 6/3 in the position below. The only question he asks is, "How do you nactate that?"

The post entitled Nactation of Doublets (complete table) tells you everything you need to know. The table below has been copied from that post.

  • Far — The entire move is made on the far side of the board, including entering a checker from the bar. The checker can land anywhere on the far side, from the midpoint on up.
  • Down — A move made to or within the outer board. The checker must land in the outer board on the near side, but can be moved from any point in either outer board.
  • Jump — Jumping over the bar means moving a checker from a point in the outer board, and landing on a point in the inner board.
  • Inside — A checker is moved entirely within the inner board, including checkers that are borne off.

In the case of 24/21(2) 8/5 6/3, two checkers are played on the far side, one checker jumps over the bar, and one more is played inside. As the ratios Far:Down:Jump:Inside are 2:0:1:1, the move is part of the Y (Yoga split) family. The only other play in this position that has the same ratios is 24/21(2) 7/4 6/3.

A close check of the foregoing table, however, will reveal that there is another set of ratios that belong to the Y (Yoga split) family. They are Far:Down:Jump:Inside = 2:1:0:1. This means that there is a third member of the Y (Yoga split) family, namely 24/21(2) 13/10 6/3.

To rank these three plays, one uses the Hit/Most/Six Rule. As none of the plays makes a hit, the Hit Convention is irrelevant. Similary, the Most-Points Convention can be ignored, because none of the plays uniquely makes or retains any points. The entire ranking will be based on the 6pt Convention.

All family members slot the 3pt, so it is the other blot destination in each play that must be compared under the 6pt Convention. We need to rank 4pt, 5pt and 10pt. The only complication is that darn "wrinkle" whereby blots in the outer board are preferred when they are farther away from the 6pt. More specifically, blots and spares in a player's outer board are preferred when the one closest to the 6pt is as far back as possible. If it's throwing you a curve, try using the step-by-step Procedural Description of Hit/Most/Six.

*This is the deciding criterion.

In a post from February 2011, Nack gives lower case y as the Nactation for 24/21(2) 8/5 6/3. Today, the same play is nactated with upper case Y. Although, I'm not sure how Nack made his assignment, I do not believe he made a mistake. It was just about that time when Nack was contemplating the creation of underlined Nactation families. It is likely that Nack's use of lower case y was correct at the time, and that the definition of Y (Yoga split) or Hit/Most/Six has been altered since Nack wrote his post.
