Pick your poison:
  • Bar/24 13/7* — White hits back with any 7, plus any entering number in combination with 1 or 3.
  • Bar/18 — This play leaves only one blot, and keeps the valuable midpoint, but gives White 1, 6, 8 and 11 as hitting numbers.
From the bar, White has several awkward 4s and 6s. Hitting also gains a tempo, making it harder for White to complete the escape of his last checker.
