As the token intermediate posting here, I don’t know enough not to make the 5pt! Blue trails by 11 pips, so he will need to roll well or else hit before this game is over. Making the 5pt helps in both cases. The only serious contender for me is the pick and pass. Hitting now pushes White back 4 pips, and gives him 9 dancing numbers, but it also let’s him hit back with 7 numbers, and buries another Blue checker on the 1pt. The buried checker is the reason that pick and pass is the inferior racing play. Making the five points gives White 13 numbers that hit, but also gives Blue the better four-point board. In a game that still has much contact, that could turn out to be the difference. Match-equity considerations are important, but I’m not sure how to factor them in. If Blue is able to recube later, White will be facing the prospect of being down at -2 / -5. Mike
