In Response To: Rynell's Broadcasts Were Excellent! (Chuck Bower)

I agree with Joe.

1) Regarding polarizing filters and/or film. You may want to stop in at a specialty camera shop, they likely can help out immensely if they know their trade. An alternative might be your local planetarium or astronomy club. The player speaking to Rynell with the experience is Pete Esposito - he can be found on Facebook.

2) I concur with the quality of the feeds. There was a time period where video feed was a bit of a problem for a wider group of people on Saturday evening during the last broadcast. Beyond that it was great. I also had an issue on Sunday but it was localized to m wireless connection. I changed the wireless channel being used and all was fine.

3) Download Speed isn't a good measure of Streaming performance. Latency can still be an issue with long distance connections. The primary Ustream servers are located on the west coast of the US. As well, traffic shaping by ISP's and routers can degrade stream performance especially during peak hours.

4) Since I transcribed about 8 hours of matches, I can say the quality was pretty good. One of the key issues was the glare. about 1 in every 30-50 rolls the dice had glare on it and had to rely checker movement to determine what had been rolled. Glossiness of checkers and the color schemes generally played a roll in how well it looked on video. Rynell had a tougher go of this because she accepted most of the equipment of the players. Black dice with white pips work best. The best boards were the ones that were shades of black and white, including the checkers. Dull white checkers looked better. Black and white present very good contrasts. The worst for contrast (no offense intended) was Tom Duggans Halloween inspired board. Nice board but to me orange and brown are not overly contrasting. CJC's leopard skin board was nice, but it was overly distracting to me. It drew my eyes away from the playing surface. The fancy checkers with the swirls in them actually don't do as well in the lighting conditions that were present. The swirls usually intensified the glare. Filters and camera position can help with this in the future.

5) Big thanks to Rynell since she was the primary driver for keeping this running smoothly. Thanks to Tara in the online chat for the XG analysis of certain positions. Thanks to the occasional commentators that showed up - Neil Kaz was one of a few. Thanks to the USBGF staff who supported the endeavor, and thanks to the actual players who allowed themselves to be under the spotlight!
