Should Major Tournament Events be Allowed to be 'Resolved' by Agreement Rather than by Play?

I'm not proposing this for backgammon, but it's worth noting that in professional sports all sorts of hedging are strictly forbidden. You can argue that it makes a difference whether the prize money comes from the competitors' entry fees or from a sponsor, but I think it's more than that. Even though nobody watches Federer vs. Nadal because they care about who will win the prize money (except possibly for Mrs. Federer), somehow people would feel less like it was a real competition if they found out Federer and Nadal agreed to split the prize money and just play for the title.
We don't go that far in backgammon, but I think it is important that titles and honors be won and lost in a fair fight. It is bad for the game if the players can simply reach an agreement on who gets to win the championship. Honestly, who would even want a trophy if the other guy just agreed to hand it to you?
