Backgammon isn't a sport, it's a game. In some other existing games hedging is allowed.
I would feel in your specific tennis example it was less of a 'real competition' if they decided to play for the money and someone was given the title, not the other way around. Players like Federer and Nadal aren't out there playing for the money, they're playing for the trophy, the title.
