Of course what they care about is the title. But there is still a rule against hedging, and it is taken very seriously. Presumably there is a reason the sponsor doesn't want the players to chop the prize fund and just play for the title.
If you want an analogy to a game rather than a sport, deals are pretty much standard in poker tournaments, but I don't think anyone denies that a tournament organizer has a right to ban deals if he really wants to. I seem to recall that the WPT banned dealmaking once upon a time. If I remember correctly, the WSOP allows deals but you still have to play for the bracelet.
