Should Major Tournament Events be Allowed to be 'Resolved' by Agreement Rather than by Play?

The question was not raised for academic, theoretic, or rhetorical purposes. I know one final event -- and was told by a good source that a second final event -- at the NYC Metro was resolved by agreement and not played. I find this wholly inappropriate and am surprised/disappointed that more players have not responded similarly on this forum. As I said earlier, I think such actions undermine the integrity of tournaments and insult the game, the other players, the directors, etc.
Certainly, as I and others have noted, there can be exceptions leading to such unfortunate actions. In these cases I don't believe any legitimate exceptions existed.
And, now, you will all want to know which events were not played so you'll know who actually 'won' their events and who did not 'win'. That is part of the problem -- the 'legitimate' winners are tainted by those who 'agreed to take the trophy'.
