Let's not guess - see below.
My current understanding of these positions is that when we are WILLING to be hit, take off two when we can do so while holding all points. I'm sure there are exceptions, but this is the fundamental. Take off two unless you see reason to do otherwise. I try to focus on the vision of having the maximum number of checkers off when my opponent enters. Of course, as our positions improves, we need to watch for the point when we are no longer willing to be hit.
