This is absolutely the right way to analyze a position. I'm not saying your analysis is perfect; I'm sure that if a top-notch analyst were to put his mind to it, he would identify further crucial features of the position and perhaps arrive at his conclusions more efficiently. But that's not so important as understanding the process. You formulate a hypothesis and test it, and adjust your hypothesis as necessary, interacting with the position.

Now, when you put this position in your notebook and revisit it later, you'll be recalling not just the answer, but the lessons you learned by analyzing it.
