Atlanta has given (going for it on 4th and 1) a very bad name... (both against the Giants and New Orleans.)

I probably seem like I can never be pleased because I complain incessantly about teams not going for it on 4th down and then when they do....

I'm sure you saw way more Atlanta plays than I did, but the one 4th and GO I remember made me gag. It was in the playoff game against the Giants and in the 3rd quarter they faced 4th and 1 at about the Giants 20 yardline. They telegraphed a quarterback sneak and the Giants' defense stuffed it.

There was no one behind the QB and he took the snap in the up position. (I did see a receiver go in motion, coming towards the QB.) I think a 3rd grader could have concluded exactly how the play was going to transpire.

Maybe they thought by hurrying up that the Giants would be caught off guard. In fact the Giants Middle Linebacker made no hesitation in moving straight at the Atlanta center. It wasn't close.

Frank made another good point regarding quarterback sneaks -- they squelch any chance of positive outliers, namely gaining more than one meager yard.

At the highest levels of American football there seems to be a huge under-appreciation for the element of surprise. But I think you are right -- they will use these (thoughtless) failures to bolster their convictions that going for it on 4th down is a bad ploy.
