How to calculate fair board reversal on a double?

My friend Alex and I were playing earlier this week and on a money game I doubled him. He thought it was a drop and I thought it was a take. So, I offered to switch the board around so that I would play his position. I took the cube and got gammoned. So, instead of being +1, I was -4. Alex felt bad but I prevailed upon him to accept the stakes.

I should have realized that it was a bad bet for me to take, considering that upon accepting the cube I would be the defininte underdog.

However, I suspect there is a way to compensate the the player who makes this type of offer, so that the outcome of the game would be fair to both.

Is there a way to do this?
