Stepping under the gun - a dynamic definition

A dynamic definition of "stepping under the gun" by Joe Sylvester 1990? or 1992 in a lecture in Dauville - France - printed in Harold Johanni's magazine at that time.

Sly said: (I am paraphrasing) From a deep anchor, stepping up on the enemy 5 point (or a point the enemy wants) is dangerous, but perhaps it is the right thing to do. One can get bolder when the enemy builders are surplusses on points. Those buliders are not activated additionally by the major split as the enemy would have made that high point irrespective of the position of our man. But if the enemy block on the bar and 8 point was stripped, stepping on the enemy 5 point would really ignite the guns. Those guns would otherwise remain silent (not making or slotting the 5 from the 8 or 7 points, because the enemy would need to break for to make. These reasons are especially true if the enemy is ahead and would not want to give any shot.
