Repairing illegal moves in non-clocked play

I am always surprised that virtually EVERY backgammon player is not aware of the correct procedure for correcting an illegal play in non-clocked play.
If you make an illegal play and pick up your dice, and your opponent asks you to correct it, you have to put the dice back on the board!!!
I have to ask everybody to do this, and everybody is jarred by it. "What? I don't understand. You want me to do what?"
This is a no-brainer. The way of finishing a move in backgammon is to pick up your dice. When you repair an illegal move, you get to start over and play anything you like. Why would the mechanic for saying your move is over be any different?
