studying openings

I never recommended memorizing, though as I always say, that's better than nothing. Taking the time to understand the openings will help you with the latter parts of the game. Here for example, I'm going to assume you made a medium size error to a blunder with one of the splits and not two up because you didn't understand the opening.
As higonefive said, the opening happens every game. Some games you won't see the middle or end of a game thanks to the cube but you can't dodge the opening no matter how hard you try. Many things that apply to the opening will apply later in the game and you'll be able to pick them out thanks to opening play.
