In one position, you have a lot of blots that could be picked up in a tactical exchange, but that without further hitting could be turned into points. Also, hit and out means that next turn you'd have a lot to do - make new points and safety the escaped checker.

In the other position you have a point acting as potential builder for the home board, in a tactical exchange the point cannot be picked up, so you can increase your race lead and start escaping checkers with a tempo.

It is a matter of on how many fronts you are exposed, and what move allows you to utilize the potential in the position.
