I've found that a high quality web cam (with HD imaging) can be purchased for less than $100 (versus a low quality video camera, which usually start at around $200 and go up from there). Web cams are very lightweight and require very little space in schlepping around the world, and can quite easily handle live streaming and simply recording a video file for later viewing, unlike many video camera models.

You can buy a cheap tripod from Fry's or Walmart for less than $30, or you can construct your own (as I have) out of PVC tubing, with a horizontal boom, for less than $10 in materials from Home Depot.
