You are right about the technology. But much simpler would be a board that detects checker moves and dice rolls. That technology too exists (cfr Poker table that detects the cards dealt by using RFID) but hasn't been applied to backgammon yet. Various compromises could be made. On one hand of the spectrum you'd have a simple touchscreen backgammon board (exists for iPad, I'd like something larger, with Windows 8 we'll see the affordable large screen touchpads coming). On the other hand, what I dream about, a physical board that looks and feels like the ones we use now, but with RFID or similar technology to detect all rolls, doubling, and checker play, and which sends it directly to the bot of your choice. The Bezma board has some of these aspects, but still needs to much manual intervention in my opinion. Come on inventors...
