No one forced to play on a computer. Clock settings vary if played on a computer? Certainly seems appropriate to do so, but don't ask me to define the settings yet.
Well, no one likes being forced into something, but consider at least one online match for each round start time (with options for more than one):
1) Tara is part of this new (San Antonio tourney) effort (right?),
2) Nobody playing online has to worry about playing "upside down",
3) BG players around the world crave being able to watch important, pressure packed, live matches,
4) An online match is good publicity for the particular event, the particular tournament, the particular website showing it, a corp/etc. sponsor (if there is one), and backgammon in general.
5) Streaming of backgammon matches still has serious problems (and maybe will 9 months from now).
If you don't want to require it, you may be able to give some incentive for doing so. But, really, I wonder how many WC players would be uncomfortable playing a match online, particularly when the rewards for the game in general are part of the result. (OK, there's one in every crowd.)
Regarding clock settings for OtB vs. online play, (and here I'm assuming the website has no issue with transmission delays affecting the clock timing), both players involved have the same advantage/handicap. But if there is concern (which apparently there is) that time settings being the same for an online match as an OtB match leads to an unfair advantage to online players, then THIS may be the incentive I'm talking about -- play online and get more time to think.
If you do decide to allow online (or bot-moderated computer) play AND you decide the settings should be different than for the OtB matches, please give this considerable research time and effort (even asking for volunteers but with oversight from a research coordinator). Maybe some people accept the "trust me; I know what I'm talking about and I don't have to give evidence of support" argument. I'd like to think many (if not most) don't.
