If I correctly interpret your comment, I fully share certain of your sentiments. I want to maintain the differentiation between live event matches and an on-line event matches. I think everyone recognizes that playing over a live board is a totally different experience requiring an expanded skill set.
That is why I think the ideal execution of the intended format is totally live board play with the PR-related matches input to XG while being played -- though I am not totally opposed to two parties, sitting next to each other, playing their match on a computer if they both choose to do so.
The other segment of the equation is to allow as many on-line viewers as possible to watch as many of the matches as they wish. This is desirable for the promotion and growth of the game. Live streaming has been done from a number of tournaments with varying degrees of success -- I believe all of us remain on a bit of a learning curve in this regard, and tournaments are dependent on their venue's available IT capabilities and support. Other screen sharing options may provide potential solutions, also.
If you object to portions of the event being PR-based rather than score-based, then I must disagree with you. For the accomplished players, I think PR-based play is challenging, exciting, and entertaining -- for the participants and for the audience. In my opinion, it complements the traditional game without threatening the traditional game. I think the vast majority of play should, and will, remain score-based. This will certainly be the case in San Antonio. Some bit of PR-based play, however, is, in my opinion, a nice change of pace for the accomplished players.
I think, hopefully, that our event addresses these points. Sure, it is a bit different and innovative; however, I think it will have appeal to the backgammon community. To grow our game we need exposure and we need stars, celebrities, or whatever one may wish to call them -- players that people know and recognize. In all successful sports and games the best want to play against the best and prove they're the best; the masses want to watch, to learn, and to be entertained by the best -- be it in golf, basketball, poker, or whatever. People want to see the best perform against each other and they want a method of measuring the best against some standard of play -- however subjective or objective that may be. It stirs interest, discussion, and debate -- which additonally advances interest. I think the Dual-Duel event can accomplish this.
