I assume that if you are playing an online match your opponent is also, so how is this an advantage?

I guess Bill needs to respond to your question. I have heard arguments in the past (by TD's) that it is unfair to players who choose to play on a real board if others are allowed to play on a computer. The reasoning I was given is that there is less stress on a computer because there can be no annoying cocked dice and no rules violations (e.g., in particular, illegal moves) so a computer player needs to be less vigilant regarding his opponent's actions. (My response was "what about the lower stress resulting from playing on high quality boards which allow easy/smooth checker movement compared so some low quality boards that don't?" but I didn't get a satisfactory -- IMO -- response.)
