I think televised backgammon is a pipe dream. I'm happily awaiting the day when I'm proven wrong and it has an appeal outside of everyone who would like to be at the tournament anyway. I know you weren't comparing ability but the reason those you mentioned were good for the game is because they excelled above and beyond and on top of that has some type of 'outrageous personality'. The way I see it (and I'm not talking about Shahab here, just in general) is that if you act that way and aren't great, you're just another asshole. That's why with everything I do I strive to be really good because I know people wouldn't put up with me otherwise.
