>> I somewhat remember him saying something like: he wouldn't be attending next year and without him this tournament would be nothing. Maybe he's right and yet maybe he's full of shit.
I would'n bet on this to be his own decision to make :-)
And I'm fairly sure that the tournament would attract fewer tube views without him - but also fewer harassed players, fewer rulings, and a more friendly playing environment, leaving more of the outcome of the matches to actual backgammon skill and knowledge, rather than other angleshooting antics supposed to gain an advantage not based on knowledge of the game or playing ability...
I certainly know what kind of tournament I would prefer to participate in! (as player or director alike).

SO, even though McEnroe and the other profiles mentioned in this thread made their game so much more interesting to watch, they had some lines that they didn't stepped over. Getting angry with a referee in the heat of a moment, or shouting out when you loose a key point, or even being angry for a minute or two, after loosing a match is one thing. Behaviours worse than that, on the borderline to angleshooting, purposedly bothering opponents in ways not allowed within the rules, threatening people, etc, is something completely different.
Would you think is was "good for the game" if Tiger Woods started to knock over his bag everytime his opponents was hitting the ball? If he was constantly speaking and shouting to them when they were lining up for a put? No, I don't think so.
Backgammon is not chess or bridge, but neither is it poker or boxing! Even the "colorful" players should respect the game and the opponents they're playing!
