Degree of Difficulty Evaluation

In Response To: The next major revolution in backgammon bots (Timothy Chow)

Currently, we don’t know what the true ranking of players should be because some plays are tougher than others and we have no way of measuring this factor in a game or match.

There is no doubt we know who the best are as a group but what the ranking should be within the group is not clear. True, those having enough matches recorded, and playing at a 3 are not as good as those averaging a 2 you would think, but there is the problem of not enough live matches for statistical certainty, some matches include plays made because of the ‘human factor’, and where PR’s of top players are fairly close, degree of difficulty could make a difference. It certainly could make a big difference in PR’s for a given game or match.

If PR ratings included the degree of difficulty factor we could give recognition to superlative play and not be fooled by low PR’s where plays were easy. If this factor were isolated, we could have a new population of positions that we could recognize as having a high degree of difficulty and select from these for study.

Can it be accomplished by setting up standards for complexities and factoring these into the PR formula? I believe the quest to achieving this outcome could very well teach us a lot more about the game that we don’t know now. This is my choice for the next bot revolution.
